Subashi Gucheng Temple and Ruins

The Subashi Temple once was a Buddhist temple and was built i the first century

The place reflects Subashi's past brilliance; Subashi Temple witnessed the development of Buddhism in central Xinjiang and reached it’s peak during the sixth and eight centuries in the Sui and Tang dynasties.It was abandoned from 13th century when Islam was introduced to Xinjiang and began to prevail and it never recovered since. Subashi Temple was a Buddhism temple, which was built in the first century and reached its peak during the sixth to the eighth centuries in the Sui and Tang dynasties. In the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), the hierarch Xuanzang was pulled by the splendor of the temple and the popularity of Buddhism in this area, and stayed here for more than 2 months on his way to India to get Buddhist sutra.

Then over 10 thousand monks and many hierarchs came from the interior of China to promote and develop Buddhism here. In the ninth century, the temple was destroyed by wars and never recovered.


The Subashi Ruins are located 23 km (14 miles) northwest of Kuqa County.

How to get to Kuqa, Xinjiang Province

There is a bus from Hotan to Kucha every day and the bus leaves in the afternoon and arrive in the morning, ticket price around 170yuan , you can book book the ticket before the date of bus departure.

From Urumqi

By air

There are several daily flights from Urumqi - 90 minutes- to Kuqa

By train

There are five train leaving from Urumqi to Kuqa, the journey takes 8 hours - tickets from 10 USD

From Kashgar

By train

There are daily 4 trains leaving from Kashgar towards Urumqi stoping at Kuqa (8 hours ride, price from 15USD)

By car

Alternatively you can rent a driver with a car
