If you have heard of the 'tall trees', the magnificent swamp gums of the Tasmanian South West Wilderness and you would like to see them without putting on serious bushwalking gear and a ten-day backpack, try this for the gentler solution.
This is a beautiful park with excellent nature. There are plenty of walks to choose from for all fitness levels. The waterfall walks are among the prettiest you will find anywhere. A slightly hairy and roughish road takes you up to the snow field level and a spectacular and very easy walk around Lake Dobson, so it is well worth the drive.
Most people leave the park immediately once they have completed the -easy- waterfalls circuit.
And they don’t even know what they miss out!
To my opinion the real gem of Mt Field National park is the drive up to the alpine region to Lake Dobson.
Me, getting used to European and Asian flora / fauna - this place was like being on another planet; totally -to me- new flowers blossoming in the Tasmanian summer (10C), ever changing fog season around the lake and that color green that never ends.
Never.
Mount Field National Park is a 1-hour drive (65km) to the northwest of Hobart on the way to the west coast and its a fantastic day trip.
There is no public transport to the park.
